Fahpetchnoi holds a 21-3 record with 14 KOs. |
Fahpetchnoi Kratingdaenggym is likely to get a title shot against WBC flyweight champion Daisuke Naito in Japan on December 24, his promoter Piyarat Wachirarattawongse said yesterday.
Naito's camp has asked Piyarat to pick a challenger from his camp and Piyarat said Fahpetchnoi, the interim WBC World Youth bantamweight champion, is the front-runner.
"They want a challenger from our camp and Fahpetchnoi seems to be the best choice," the promoter said.
Chatchai Sor Thanayong and Noknoi Kratingdaenggym are also in the frame but they both are much less experienced than Naito who won the title from Pongsaklek Krantingdaenggym last July.
Although the 20-year-old Fahpetchnoi is currently in the 118-pound division, it would not be a problem for him to move down to the flyweight category because his normal weight is 112 pounds.
"He did not fight in the 112-pound division because we had another boxer. Fighting in this division may be better for him," he said.
But fighting in Japan may not be a good omen for the Roi Et native who has lost twice in that country.
Last year, Fahpetchnoi (21-3, 14KOs) was well beaten by Daiki Kameda and Tomonobu Shimizu. He also scored an unconvincing victory over North Korea's Kim Hyok Jun in Bangkok.
The 33-year-old Naito knocked out compatriot Shimizu in his third title defence in August.
Piyarat was confident that the 112-pound belt would return to Thailand in the near future.
If Fahpetchnoi fails to win the title, Piyarat still has Panomrunglek Kratingdaenggym, the number one challenger, who is likely to have a mandatory fight within 12 months.
With Fahpetchnoi and Panomrunglek on the waiting lest, it is not possible for former champion Pongsaklek to get a shot to win back the crown.
