Clash of heads kayoes Winyu

Euro2008 news update

TOKYO : Winyu Paradorngym lost her WBC female atomweight belt to Momo Koseki in Japan yesterday after being knocked down in the second round following a clash of heads.

It was Winyu's first defence since being crowned champion last August, but the 25-year-old's attempt ended in disaster when she was counted out by the referee.

One official beside the ring signalled that the pair had clashed heads but instead of warning Koseki or giving Winyu time to recover he waved the fight over after the badly hurt Thai had clambered to her feet.

The Thai team protested at the venue but the decision stood and Koseki was given the belt.

Promoter Preeyakorn Rattanasuban said that after looking at the tape it was clear that the pair had clashed heads. Winyu, who left the ring with large swelling on her forehead, has an option for a rematch.

"She was badly hit by Momo's head," said Preeyakorn.

As for Momo (6-2), it was the third time lucky for her to win the title after losing to Winyu for the vacant WBC female atomweight title and Samson Sor Siriporn for the WBC female light-flyweight championship.

However, the newly-crowned champion didn't seem very happy to take the belt from the Thai.

Preeyakorn said before leaving for Japan that she was really concerned about the refereeing in Japan.

"With my experience in Japan, I was worried about that," she said.

On the undercard at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo super-flyweight Wandee Singwangcha, 28, was defeated on points by Takahisa Masuda of Japan.
