Former world champion Chatchai Sasakul will challenge Cristian Mijares for the WBC and WBA super-flyweight belts in Mexico on August 30, his promoter Wirat Wachirarattanawongse said yesterday.
Wirat said the offer from Mijares' camp was too good to turn down and that former WBC flyweight champion Chatchai had begun training for the fight.
''He is back to training. We hope he regains fitness in 40 days,'' he said.
It is likely to be the 38-year-old Thai's last title shot but he will have to face a strong opponent who is 12 years younger.
In his most recent fight, he scored a second-round knock-out over journeyman Anis Ceunfin of Indonesia in Nakhon Sawan last December.
Chatchai, is ranked fourth by the WBC and is 64-3 with 39KOs, won the flyweight title in 1997 when he outpointed Yuri Arbachakov in Japan.
Mijares (35-3-2, 14KOs) added the WBA crown to his WBC title by scoring a split decision over Alexander Munoz of Venezuela in May.
He took the WBC title in 2007 with a 10th-round knock-out win over Japanese Katsushige Kawashima in Japan.
