Posters advertising the exhibit. Running from June 7 to July 6.

user posted image

Down the hall, and double sided! The last ones were exclusively from downstairs on the platform. A serious number of man-hours went into this project.

user posted image

Rumour has it that the "year of friendship" between Korea and Japan is in trouble.

user posted image

And the Koreans are out to conquer Japan!

user posted image

The men in uniform are ready. Forgot the North Koreans, they are brothers. Japan is the real enemy!

user posted image

They're packing heat! And they aren't afraid to use them.

user posted image

They've got enough for everybody!

user posted image

But once they've tasted blood, they'll take over the world!

user posted image

Only the mighty Japanese samurai can save the day!

Perhaps someone should have told this child that while painting the Japanese as having buck-teeth was done in the past as a slur, it was actually meant to apply to all Asians rather than just the Japanese. Memorize your ethnic slurs today!

user posted image

Japan certainly seems to die a lot in these pictures.

user posted image

One night only! A tiger verses a monkey! Wait, does Japan even have monkeys? Hoe-Ree-Cow! They do! Wait, oh... I get it. It's another slur. Rock on!

I wonder what would happen if we combined racial slurs with death?

user posted image

Now I know.

user posted image

What a fine idea in settling the two issues. Get the two leaders in a winner-takes-all wrestling match!

user posted image

Or put everyone in Japan in a cage, that works too.

user posted image

One would think that the leader of an island nation of 120 million would be able to swim.

user posted image

No longer are the Japanese monkeys, rather they have become bats now. But then Batman is cool so that might not be the best slur to be using.

user posted image

I'm not really sure.

user posted image

A popular claim in Korea today is that Japan wanted everyone to spell Korea with a C because K comes after C. Highly inaccurate, but sells newspapers. That, and Japan was asking everyone to call them "Nippon" instead of "Japan" at the time and N comes after both C & K..

user posted image

Monkey boxing.

...or...

user posted image

Monkey bombing! Super Monkey Ball has nothing on this!

user posted image

While one flag makes for a lovely footmat...

user posted image

A tiled collection is much more impressive.

user posted image

Alas! Japan has fallen off the Internet! Or something has. Maybe it was never there.

user posted image

Seems this child got the whole thing backwards, and Japan is telling Korea to fuck off. And giving Korea the finger, somehow.

user posted image

How sad, Japan has no friends.

user posted image

Not another match!

user posted image

Instead of just one fire, this one is suffering from two ignition sources!

user posted image

This nice man is saving the flag. How nice.

user posted image

And his friend is helping too!

user posted image

I must have missed that issue.

user posted image

Puma is going to be pissed!

user posted image

Apparently the Liancourt Rocks are ripe tomotoes under the watchful eye of Korea, while they were certainly less than desirable under Japan. But then Korean schoolbooks teach the tomatoes are vegetables so I don't know if we can put a lot of faith in this one.

user posted image

Seems the UN had a vote and decided the Liancourt Rocks were Korea's.

user posted image

The vote was 40 million to zero.

user posted image

One shouldn't approach the rocks. Or they'll open fire!

user posted image

Oh no! It's sinking! Another ship sunk by the brave forces on the rocks. Last time it was with mortars, this time with cannons.

user posted image

Doing the happy dance!

user posted image

That's right, hands off!

user posted image

Or Korea will bite!

user posted image

And then Japan will die. Again.

user posted image

I'm not sure where "Fuck the Americans!" comes from. This child is obviously still stuck in last week. Or possibly from the future when it's "fuck the Americans!" week again next week.

user posted image

If only everyone could just pick up the phone and have a sane negotiation.

user posted image

It seems the rule is that Japanese companies suck and Korean companies rule. Except for Sony because everyone likes the PlayStation here, and Lotte which is a Japanese company lead by a man who used to be a Korean so the jury is still out on whether they hate the company or not.

user posted image

They make lovely subway posters, I would miss them if they were gone. And they change them every couple weeks.

user posted image

That's right, Japan! You suck!

user posted image

You suck, and we're going to clean the place up!

user posted image

You suck, and we're going to clean the place up by wringing you out!

user posted image

You suck, and we're going to clean the place up by wringing you out and taking out the trash!

user posted image

You, and your little hat too!

user posted image

Ice cream! YES! Can't have a festival of hate without some soft ice cream.

user posted image

No need to use large swords when an exacto knife does the job. Curiously, exacto knives are pretty much standard issue for all students in Korea.

user posted image

Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

user posted image

What do you do with erasers, you ask?

user posted image

You rub things out!

user posted image

They may hate Japan and the people, but the cute robotic cats from the future can stay.

user posted image

Even the Power Rangers have switched sides! No, Kimberly!! Say it's not so!

user posted image

Hello Miss Moon.

user posted image

No Japan for you!

user posted image

That's right! Pong! PONG! Wait, pong? The game where you bounce a ball back and forth? There is no power or strength in pong, though I did get to talk to Nolan Bushnell once and he marketed Pong.

user posted image

THat's a pretty big cannon.

user posted image

It's a trick question! Every answer is the same. I'm so smart, nothing gets by me.

user posted image

Korean and Japanese phones sort of look the same.

user posted image

How.... phallic. Maybe Korea really is just frustrated.

user posted image

Violent, yet straight forward.

user posted image

Dangerous.

user posted image

So the Liancourt Rocks are 20km from Korea and 30KM from Japan. Ok, I understand.

user posted image

What? 30km vs 55km? You just said it was 20km and 30km.

They are actually 90km to the nearest Korean island (Ulleungdo) and 160km from the Korean mainland, and 160km from the nearest Japanese island (Oki Islands) and 250km from the Japanese mainland.

user posted image

I don't know if it's wise to be talking about the IQ of the enemy when one can't even get the distance correct as to what they are fighting over, but anyway Japan is lead by a man with an IQ of -1000. And the sly child coupled that with a picture that basically means he is a crying bitch. (puppy / dog-baby is a Korean swear word) Not as brave as the guy who drew a picture of Japan saying "fuck you" to Korea, but he made the effort.

user posted image

Actually, that should be "KTF". Now I can use my phone on the rocks if I go to visit there. YES! And they are a fine Internet provider. "Have a good time." The Japanese are stupid indeed...

user posted image

Well, at least they are playing together instead of the Japanese flag being murdered.

user posted image

I'm not really too sure. Perhaps the child was saying "I'm going to tear you a new asshole."

user posted image

Oh crap, giant squid! And they are making Japan stinky! Or shitty. Both?

user posted image

Can't go a day without involving the Americans.

user posted image

Step one: Kill a Japanese citizen.

user posted image

Step two: Place body here, wherever here is.

user posted image

Step three: Repeat until one can repeat no more.

user posted image

Or if one runs out of time, burning the place down works too.

user posted image

Boot to the curb!

user posted image

This is not a poorly drawn woman, but a man.

user posted image

I told you. Though at least he just dresses in drag and wears a flower on his head to make the large dollars instead of going under the knife for something more permanent.

user posted image

Oh fuck! He's going to eat Japan! And damn it, he can do it!

user posted image

I'm pretty sure the X and O doesn't mean kiss and hug as one would traditionally expect.

user posted image

Ah ha! That's how they do it! Hypnosis! Now you too will believe every claim ever made!

user posted image

After being hypnotized, Japan will surely say they were sorry. Again. For the who-knows-how-many-timeth. Timeth? Is that a word? Probably not. Oh, and they probably want cash.

user posted image

Japan's sun is setting.

user posted image

And there will be much sadness with the people in Japan.

user posted image

But there is hope for the future.

user posted image

One day, the broken hearts will have healed.

user posted image

And perhaps one day, everything will be all right.

Next is a book written by Mis. O. Sonfa
http://www.amazon-watcher.com/asin/409402476X
She also received ant-Japan education in Korea many years ago, and thought Japan is "a nation of Devil".
Now, she ceverely criticizes anti-Japan education of South Korea.

Gord, your comments are truly hilarious!

As for the pictures… I don’t know what to say. They are simply too bizarre. Children are impressionable so I can see them drawing these hateful images. But for teachers and adults organizing this exhibit, what the hell are they thinking? Some drawings contain English so I assume they are conscious of tourists/foreigner seeing these. Do they think they will be impressed with children screaming “Fuck!” and adults proudly displaying that vulgarness? Geez, Korea is truly a bizzaro world.

Gord, I was surprised to see those pictures. I was wondering why just children need to inherit such feelings? One of the possible answers, I would say, wil be just they need(ed) such antipathy against Japan, forged and engendered there to get their own nationalism that their ancestors really wanted to be against Japan and other imperialistic countries one hundred years ago. If they want to make their occupation of Liancourt Rocks secure, they only have to leave it to the World Court, as suggested by the Japanese government. I'm afraid now the Korean government HAS no intention to be a friend with Japan. They just need it as the only available virtual enemy to encourage their people to work or study harder to get the country to be strong enough to assuage their anguish and anger against themselves in the past.

It seems these drawings were done by students from Gyeyang middle school, as announcement of this exhibit can be found on their site.

Could anyone enlighten me on whether this is a public school or a private school? Government is still responsible for allowing it to be displayed at a public venue (subway station) so it won't excuse them but still it will be slightly more fathomable (although still way out there in realm of bizzaro world) if this was done by a private school.

Gord,
These pictures are now well publicized in the net and help people understand Korean jingoistic mentality.
Non-Koreans dunt care whatever paranoia they teach in Korean schools. But to show them public is like propaganda
Of a third world country under the war. Political leaders in Korea want to take nation back to 60 years ago?

I just want to say Koreans that you don't need to educate your kids to behave shamelessly like this no matter how much you feel you have damaged by our history. Your historical perspective and ours are all diferrent, and we Japanese are sincerely trying to filling the gap through serious academic discussions. However, Koreans are agressively "press" to take your perspective completely only and you just don't listen to the Japanese historian's opinions.

What!? Is this really a manner of cultually progressed country like you Koreans??? Boy, you amuse me too well..... :(

For those who do not know what I mean:

Koreans are always saying that they are elderly brother of Japan and everything including culture of Japan, has been brought by this kind and great elderly brother, ha! That's why they believe Sailor Moon or Gundum are even theirs, not ours, ridiculous enough!

I think that korean should have made an autopurification against these drawings and anti-japanese education by themselves before Gord charged by showing these pics.
I would like to hear opinions of korean people about this problem.
how do korean hope to resolve it? and what are the specific methods?

Gord your commentary really brings these pics alive.

I have to seriously question the intellect of a government that would mandated hate and preach it to the kids of any age group.

And Lyrt that map is crazy just imagine the political nightmare the world would be in if that was the way thing were the balance of power in that part of the world would be so out of wack that wars would be so common place that eventually another huge conflict would arise.

If Korea was that big I'd switch passports in a second. I might later on anyway if it looks like a good idea.

Edit: What's the demarcation line still doing there?

Lyrt,

Where did you find that map? It's both frightening and fasinating at the same time, and I'd like to get a little background on it.

Thanks!

It used to be there, but the link is dead. I’ve kept the jpg on my HDD for the same reason you evoked, it is both fascinating and frightening (incidentally, it is laughable and pitiful). I would describe the picture as “Wet Dreams by Korean Wackos”, but to be honest, this map was a private initiative and was not sponsored by the government or any school like the children’s drawings were.

But I found it typical of a form of nationalism which mixes resentment, inferiority complex and desire for revenge.

Ha! I remember that.

I especially like the one where all the Koreans are curb stomping the Japanese one going "Who does Dok-do belong to?!" and he's whimpering "It belongs to Korea..."

I teach English in Seoul. In May and April many many of my students found it very necessary to educate me on the distance between Dok-do and Korea and Dok-do and Japan and how it is mind boggingly obvious that Dok-do belongs to Korea because it is closer. Now, to the untrained eye looking at a standard map of the world or Asia, Dok-do looks neatly centred between the two countries. But, to a 12 year old cartographer, it's painfully obvious that Dok-do is much closer to Korea and the suggestion that Japan should keep control of the worthless tiny pile of rocks in the middle of the sea is simply dismissed as heresy and something that a silly foreigner would say.

Also, the idea that Dok-do could just as easily belong to China is just met with blank, confused stares.

Apparently there are people, or a person living on Dok-do, he's Korean and he basically only went there to put more validity on the claim that Dok-do belongs to Korea.

It was all a bit surreal. There were newscasts, protests against Japan, the school thing, burning flags. The Korean government has much too much control over its citizens...

Oh yeah. Korea: We Think For You
