Three of the biggest global sponsors of the Beijing Olympics have scaled back their plans for next week’s Japanese leg of the torch relay amid mounting fears of violent anti-Chinese protests, The Times has learnt.
In the first sign that the commercial side of the Olympics has been affected by the various anti-Chinese demonstrations around the world, Coca-Cola, Samsung and Lenovo have not exercised their right to run a logo-festooned vehicle along with the relay as the Olympic flame makes its way through Nagano.
Coca-Cola, which was to have led the torch relay with its vehicle, decided recently that it would not appear after watching the vehemence of anti-Chinese protests around the world.
No sponsor’s vehicles will now accompany the flame as it passes through the winter sports resort of Nagano next Saturday: a spokesman for Samsung said that Japan was the only leg of the relay where it had no plans to run the vehicle, having been warned some months in advance that security concerns had made the convoy too long.
After consultation with the authorities in Nagano prefecture – and with the overall security level of the torch-run raised to maximum levels – Coca-Cola said that it was taking “all precautions”.
A Coca-Cola spokesman said that it was no longer realistic to operate a private vehicle under the heightened security environment for the Japanese leg of the relay. The company reached its decision “after observing the situation surrounding the torch relay in various parts of the world.”
Protests surrounding the relay began in late March as the torch left Athens – Coca-Cola informed the Nagano organisers that it would not run the vehicle about a week later.
Lenovo had looked into running a vehicle for the Nagano torch-run, but cancelled those plans in late March. The company claimed that its reason for abandoning its place in the relay was related to the high cost of preparing the car itself.
The companies’ decisions to modify their plans came just hours after religious leaders at the Zenkoji temple in central Nagano, whose imposing bell was rung to open the 1998 Winter Olympics, said it could no longer be used as the starting point of the torch run in Japan.

To Debbie, China and luo, zs,
It is strange that you say the world don't know China. If this is true, pls tell us who shoule be responsible for this? Why did Chinese government drive western visitors out of Tibet and forbid the reporters to go there? Why did it refuse the U.N. to investigate?
sanitfoins, Nottingham, UK
Ideological value system gradually been abandoned since 3 decades before in China, after that China develop fast and the view of Chinese people improved much every year. However the western seems still hold its demoded ideology value system similar to the situation as China did 30 years ago ( then the medias in China are as biased as western medias , they always call for free and liberate the workers from capitalists' oppression in western countries ) , that is do bad to Chinese ,do bad to themselves , and do bad to the wholeworld. Can we be friendly to talk about our disputes?
luo, zs,
Many Chinese in these postings seem to think that the reason many people in the west support the Tibetan cause is to do with some sort of fear over the growth in the Chinese economy.
I can tell you honestly that most people here even if they have heard of the developments in China at all are unconcerned.
The governments and big business are all too happy to do business with China and probably find the current animosity inconvenient.
The fact is that the Tibetans receive a lot of support here because people genuinely think their cause is just, the Chinese are sure to disagree but to blame jealously of their economic strength is simply incorrect.

Anti-biased-news, why don't your westerners come to China and find out the truth? Why you are so afraid of our growth and development? We need an objective environment and so do you!
Debbie, China,
Well, All that you guys have said just about Politics.
Olympics has no longer been what it used to be>..
Politics is politics, business is business, sports is sports.
Time and time again ,China gained plenty of harms from Western When it really
tried hard to become a respectable member of world family, just because of its
potential threat to those current "super powers"...
Yes, it is conceded that China still has lots to do and a long
way to go, it is progressing now and more open than before ..
What confuse me a lot is that most westerners like you prefer to get imformation
about China via your native media that may have distorted some facts..
Why not try to go to China and have a new look over China.
It's certain that only your own experiences could change your stereotyped image of
China without any political prejudice.
Contrarily, we Chinese enjoy the way getting diffierent imformation overseas.
At least , I'm definitely free to visit Timesonline!!

There are so many distorted views in these comments about China
That Chinese people cannot access outside news
I have lived in China for 13 years and regularly read UK and US newspapers, either bought in China, or on the internet.
I can also see CNN and the BBC world service on satelite TV
My Chinese friends can also access these documents in the same way as myself. They can also have access to news channels via satelite
Before anyone says that what I am seeing is "doctored", I can assure you by comparison to hard copies bought in the UK the news is identical
So, Chinese people are quite able to read outside news. We can see the same stories as those outside.
Please don't make judgments from heresay evidence. Get the facts

This whole torch relay has turned into a complete stupid farce. There are either embarrassing protests e.g. London and Paris or the relay is moved to a short altered course with so much security no one gets to see it e.g. San Francisco and New Delhi. I hope the Chinese stubbornly keep going with the farce relay because the point is now that they may get to appreciate that Tibet and human rights generally, are issues that matter to people world wide. The Olympic committee will be regretting Beijing 2008 and this torch relay in particular as a PR disaster of epic proportions. Way to go China talk about giving your opponents a beautiful platform to rub your face in it. Lets hope when it gets to Canberra some of the Ozzie coppers just happen to be looking the wrong way when the protestors strike a blow for freedom. Iâm tempted to climb a gum tree and have a go at giving the torch a sprinkle with holy water myself.
M.Campbell, Canberra, OZ
I wishyou would pause for thought. In your haste (particularly Garry - 2 s?) you have forgottne how to write English! Anyhoooo, China - to be condemned. the Olympics? scrap them , they're a joke - drug fuelled cheaters, pawns in a game of politics. John Grisham, please wite the book!
neil, madrid,

I guess you mean the video clips from Tibet? Let me tell you why we havent seen any of these video clips. It is because foreign journalists are banned from entering Tibet.
In case you have forgotten, you cannot get uncensored news in China. All news in China is broadcast through the Chinese government's mouthpieces such as Xinhua, etc.

Hopefully this will not spread to other sponsors, i can see their point as there is a high possibility of serious injury as China has been bashing Japan for a while now on its no to an apology for war time issues. The religious side from Japan is getting a bit back from the China noise when anyone goes to pay a visit to the war dead. Hopefully the flame will quickly get to Beijing and things will calm as there is no protesting allowed in China unless it is sanctioned by management, and the rules of noise and who to make the noise to are, are agreed. I just hope this is not a precanent for the last days leading to what looks set to be one hell of an olympic event this century. I an not interested as it has just become one big money making commercial circus, run by a heap of world travellers, salesmen and woman waiting for hand outs. Sport is nothing now compared to what it was 30 years ago. Sad, sad, sad. I will be listening to music and generally doing nothing and TV off. Good luck.
Garry ward, Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Why aren't we seeing any of these clips in the news? I mean these actual video from tibet is more reliable than some photoshop pictures??

A Coca-Cola Truck leading a Communist Olympic Torch. Hey that's a contradiction. Or perhaps not. Did you know that these guys are really in the same game or perhaps you have already guessed that. I hope you are all enjoying the torch relay so far. It really gives everyone a great taste of China. I bet the games in Beijing will be even more scrummy (strictly in the sporting sense of the word).
