Over 200 arrested in Zimbabwe
Sat, 26 Apr 2008 17:48:53
Zimbabwe's police have arrested over 200 people in a raid on the Harare headquarters of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.

"Police rounded up 215 people at Harvest House" in the capital Harare on Friday, the state-controlled Herald newspaper quoted police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena as saying on Saturday.

The detainees "will be screened against participation in politically-motivated criminal activities around the country," he added.

But the opposition spokesman Nelson Chamisa claimed a total of 245 people had been arrested and among them were breastfeeding children, children under six years, pregnant women and some seniors.

Lawyer Alec uchadehama, however, told AFP on Saturday that "In all at least 30 people were released but have not been able to speak to any of those who are still detained at various police stations."

The police also raided the offices of the Zimbabwe Election Support Network, a group of non-governmental organizations.

The group has named MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai as the winner over President Robert Mugabe in the first round of the presidential election, from which no official results have been released to date.
