WBC YOUTH STRAW-WEIGHT

Wanheng beats Indonesia's Efendi

EDWARD THANGARAJAH

Thailand's WBC Youth straw-weight champion Wanheng Meenayothin, earned a unanimous points victory over a plucky Indonesian, Sofhyan Efendi, yesterday at the Bitec sports arena.

Landing sharp straight lefts and rights to the face and body of his Indonesian opponent _ who stood toe-to-toe throughout the ten rounds of action _ Wanheng won seven rounds, to earn the nod of the judges.

All three Thai judges: Banpote Senparb 97-93; Aran Nuchklang 98-92 and Somsri Bhusi 97-93 picked Wanheng as winner.

Nevertheless credit is due to the Indonesian who fought bravely, despite soaking up too many punches to the face, due to his weak defence and poor footwork.

If he had the ability to move round the ring, to bob and weave, he could have won at least two more rounds and reduced the margin of defeat.

Nevertheless, young Wanheng who entered the professional ranks only last year and fought only seven times, proved that he has improved a lot since winning the youth title.

His mentor and promoter, Virat Vachiraratanawongse told the Post that he is very proud of Wanheng whom he picked from the Muay Thai ranks.

Sofiyan produced the best round of the fight in the final stanza and was sorry that he could not come up with the same form early in the fight.

He thanked the Thai referee, Nopharat Sricharoen for controlling the fight well.

''When I slipped and went down to the canvas he did not give me a count. Any other referee would have given me a mandatory count,'' he said after the fight.

On the under-card the WBC Youth flyweight champion, Noknoi Sithiprasert had to stretch hard to beat another Indonesian Darmia Jordan.

All three judges scored the fight 59-55 in favour of Noknoi, but many experts thought that it was much closer,

Jordan counter-punched throughout the fight and had Noknoi in trouble in the fourth and fifth rounds of the six-round contest.

Noknoi admitted at the end of the fight that Jordan was one of the toughest opponents he had met.

The other three under-card fights ended in technical knockout victories.

Former World Boxing Council flyweight champion, Medgoen Singsurat now campaigning in the bantamweight division, carried too much power in his punches for his Filipino opponent Roger Monsueto.

He regsistered a third round TKO win.

Super-lightweight, Sarapetch Sor Sakawrat stopped his opponent, Klongchai Sor.Thiabkoon in the 50th second of the third round.

Straw-weight Sorndaeng Sith-Phuyailue stopped Kobchai Sithkorpol in the second round.
