Former world bantamweight boxing champion, 39-year-old Veeraphol Nakhonluang who was given the last opportunity to regain his title by qualifying in a final eliminator against Vusi Malinga of South Africa on May 1, in Sakaew, suffered a big setback on Sunday while training.
He hurt his right hand when he punched the head of a sparring partner and complained of severe pain.
Yesterday his manager, Suchat Pisitwuttinan took him to the Phyathai Hospital where a specialist, Dr.Kamthorn Supapornbotharam examined him and ordered two weeks rest, before resuming training.
As a result, the fight has been postponed.
But the manager of the South African boxer, Branco Milenkovic, was unhappy with the postponement and has called for the medical report.
He said no boxer will train so hard with the fight to be held a few days away.
The President of the WBC, Dr Jose Sulaiman told the Post yesterday, if any boxer is injured the WBC will never allow him to fight.
Veeraphol's manager Suchat said he will ask for time till June 12, but would wait until the WBC orders when the fight is to be held.
"This has never happened to any of my boxers. It is very unfortunate that Veeraphol was involved in such an accident," he said during the X-ray examination at the Phyathai Hospital yesterday.
Dr.Kamthorn said that Veeraphol had suffered injury to his soft tissue which was swollen. That's why he is ordering a fortnight's rest for him.
