Chatchai, Wang set for vacant title fight today

EDWARD THANGARAJAH

The two fighters who are bidding for the vacant WBC Youth Flyweight title, Thailand's Chatchai Sor Thanayong and Wang Jun Hui of China passed their tests yesterday at the Paolo Memorial Hospital without a hitch. Both tipped the scales at 112 pounds and were declared medically fit by Dr Tui Rungcharoen, for the 10-round clash which takes place at the open-air ring of the Wat Bungthongklang premises in Lardprao.

Chatchai, a former amateur boxer, who also held the Thai mini-flyweight and flyweight Muay Thai titles and was two-time gold-medallist in the Student and Youth Championships is bidding today to make good in the professional ring.

His opponent, Wang Jun Hui, from Khun Ming, whom many thought won't be able to make weight because of his height and muscular build, tipped the scales at 112 pounds and said as he got off the scales that he is ready to take the first WBC youth title to his country.

Speaking through an interpreter, he said: ''China needs a head start in professional boxing and I am confident I can do it.''

The honorary chairman of the fight today is Khunying Sudaratana Keyuraphant and the chairman is Mr Danuporn Punnakant.

The programme starts at 3 p.m. and the fight for the WBC Youth title will be held at 4 p.m.
