US targets anti-Qaeda fighters in Iraq
Thu, 15 Nov 2007 22:37:39
Iraqi tribal leaders have said the US forces have killed the paramilitary forces that were fighting against al-Qaeda militants in Iraq.

The head of the Awakening Council, a Sunni Arab tribal group, said on Thursday that American forces targeted the anti-terrorist gunmen who fought al-Qaeda terrorists in the region.

The tribal leader said the US assault on his men began late on Tuesday night in the al-Nebaei area near Taji and lasted about 12 hours.

"If the attack was a mistake, we just want to know the reasons. If they attacked us deliberately, then we will decide what to do," said the head of the Awakening Council.

The US military claimed on Thursday that it had launched an operation targeting suspected associates of senior al-Qaeda leaders in Iraq, killing at least 25 gunmen.

US forces have recently forged an alliance with Arab tribes in western Iraq and in provinces around Baghdad.
