Eagle and Oledong to meet Nov 29

EDWARD THANGARAJAH

While Thailand celebrated His Majesty the King's recovery from his illness and his return to Chitrlada Palace, Maj Gen Chay Khamwongsa announced details for the WBC strawweight championship fight to be held at the 11th Infantry boxing arena on November 29 to celebrate His Majesty's 80th birthday.

At a meeting held at the Prince Palace Hotel, Maj Gen Chay, who represented Army Commander Gen Anupong Paochinda, said the army will do everything possible to make the fight a success.

The fight will be a unique contest between two Thais, champion Eagle Den Julaphan who is based in Japan and challenger Oledong Sithsamerchai who was former WBC youth champion who defended his youth title 17 times and retired in order to bid for the world title.

On April 6, he outpointed Omar Soto of Puerto Rico in an elimination fight held at the Tabkwang stadium in Saraburi and earned the right to fight for the world title against Eagle.

Yesterday, the president of the Petchyindee Boxing Promotion, Virat Vachiraratanawong, who is organising the fight and promoter, Piyarat Vachiraratanawong, explained in detail how much work had been done to organise the WBC title-fight plus the card of Muay Thai contests between eight well-known exponents of the Thai-style of fighting.

At the end of the meeting, Trang-born Oledong told the Post that he was the first Thai boxer from the South to win a WBC youth title. He is now planning to be the first boxer from the South to win a WBC championship.

''When I won the WBC youth title, many boxing followers in the South took notice of me, but they kept on asking me to bring a world title to the South, that's what I want to do. I am training hard to win on November 29, to celebrate His Majesty's birthday,'' he added.
