ゲイツ氏は自身のブログ「gates notes」の2015年1月5日付けの投稿で、「普段飲んでいるボトル入りの水と何ら変わらない、おいしい水だった」と、記している。「この水がどんな技術で作られたかを知り、日常的に何の問題もなく飲めると思った。それくらい安全な水だ」
マイクロソフトの共同創立者であるゲイツ氏は、長年にわたって、水不足に苦しむ7億人の人々にきれいで安全な水を届ける活動に取り組んできたが、この最新技術は、そうした問題を解決するカギとなりうる。
地球全体では、いまだに約10億人が、トイレを使用せずに野外で用を足している。しかしこれは、水質汚染や、下痢など多くの疾患につながる問題であり、実際に下痢は5歳未満の子供の死因の第2位となっている。
また、トイレはあるが近代的な下水処理システムがない地域も、衛生上の危険性が高い。ゲイツ氏によれば、そうした地域では排泄物をトラックで近くの川や海まで運んで捨てたり、あるいは適切な汚水処理をしない処理施設に持ち込むのだという。そしてその結果、病原菌に汚染された排泄物が、地域の水源に流れ込んでしまうことになる。
しかし、西洋式のトイレをそうした開発途上国に普及させるのは難しく、相当な費用もかかる。だからゲイツ氏は、この人間の排泄物を水にかえることができる「オムニプロセッサー」のようなプロジェクトに希望を託している。
ワシントン州シアトルのエンジニアリング会社、ジャニッキ・バイオエナジー社が設計・製作したこの処理装置は、人間の排泄物を燃やして電気と飲料水を作り出す。装置自体の電源も、焼却の熱を利用した蒸気エンジンで供給することができる。そして排泄物はきわめて高い温度で燃やされるため、作られる水にはまったく臭いが残らない。
すでに同社は、ゲイツ氏を驚かせるような、処理装置のさらなる改良にも取り組んでいる。次世代モデルの「オムニプロセッサー S200」は10万人分の排泄物を処理し、1日に8万6000リットルの飲料水と、装置が消費する分を除いて250kWの電力を生み出せるという。
ジャニッキ・バイオエナジー社は、2015年春にセネガルの首都ダカールで、オムニプロセッサーの試験運転を行なう計画だ。この装置には大きな変革をもたらす可能性がある、とゲイツ氏は成功への自信をのぞかせる。
「この処理装置は、人間の排泄物による飲み水の汚染を防ぐだけではない。排泄物を本当に市場価値のある『商品』に作り変えるのだ。これこそ『捨てる神あれば、拾う神あり』ということわざの究極の例だろう」と、ゲイツ氏は記している。
